Hampshire Scout Group needs votes for green award

03/03/2010

The 1st Clanfield Scout Group in Hampshire have come a long way, and are calling out to fellow Scouts for help in their attempt to have their environmentally friendly meeting place recognised by a national award.

It was just over four years ago that the Group learned the horrific news that their building had been subjected to an arson attack and was condemned. But the leaders and young people of the 1st Clanfield did not wallow, but immediately began the rebuilding process, beginning a mammoth fundraising effort, which has nearly reached its target.

Central to the Group’s approach was to make the new building as environmentally friendly as possible. ‘It was an ideal time to lead by example and put into practice some of the things we teach the Scouts, of taking care of the environment,’ said Doris Barden, the Group Secretary. The plans for the new headquarters included a ground source heat pump, under floor heating and rainwater recycling, all of which the young people saw being installed and learned about during the process. Thanks to an environmental engineer, who lives in the village, eco-friendly appliances were obtained and installed.

On the shortlist

Now the group have been shortlisted for a Future Friendly Award, where they could win £10,000 towards the completion of their project. A film has been made, which voters can watch at futurefriendly.co.uk and votes are open from now until the end of March.
