Scouts help ShelterBox in Haiti

As providing reliable shelter for hundreds of thousands of Haitians becomes the priority, Scouts have been on hand pitching tents with disaster relief charity ShelterBox.
In the central Palace area of Port au Prince where 3,000 people are homeless, 50 Haitian Scouts set up 70 ShelterBox tents in less than four hours. The tent can provide shelter for an extended family of ten people for six months, and is part of the big green box that also provides essential cooking utensils, blankets and colouring books for the children.
Mark Pearson, a British member of the ShelterBox Response Team, was impressed by how quickly the Scouts took to their task. ‘I personally trained ten Scouts from Port au Prince at the 82nd Airborne HQ (US Military in Haiti). The Scouts, after I did a first demo, then set up a tent to perfection in ten minutes.’
Alex George, President of West Department International Scouts d’Haiti, said: ‘Our Scouts are themselves homeless but in true Scout tradition we are happy to help our people and feel good doing so with ShelterBox. This is brilliant equipment and the tents are perfect for Haiti.’
Mark added ‘All the Haitian people were so happy, it was a great day for all involved.’

The hands-on action from Scouts in Haiti comes after UK Members have done wonderful things to raise money for the victims of last month’s earthquake.
