African Queen

29/01/2010

The safari land of South Africa was the setting for an incredible challenge for one Scout recently. And everyone can now follow her exploits as this once-in-a-lifetime adventure is the subject of a BBC series.

Four young people from the UK and four from South Africa were selected to spend a month living at Kruger National Park learning to be Game Rangers for the Safari 8 programme. Caroline was specifically chosen as the producers were duly impressed with her background in Scouting and the outdoor skills she could already display.

Two real-life rangers, Rudi and Frankie, acted as the group’s mentors, teaching them how to track and care for wild animals. Encounters with elephants, snakes and buffaloes were just a normal part of the day for Caroline and her colleagues.

Thirst for adventure

Viewers will also get to see Caroline assist the park vets and learn about the circle of life as she pushes her stamina, instincts and thirst for adventure to the limit.

Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa, and houses the ‘Big Five’ game; Lion, African Elephant, Leopard, Cape Buffalo and Rhinoceros.  These five are so-called due to the difficulty involved in hunting them on foot. Caroline’s challenge culminates in her and the other young people leading two celebrity guests on an expedition to track each one.

More information

The Scout Association provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for 400,000 young people aged 6-25. It believes that young people develop most when they are 'learning by doing,' when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves. You could help other young people emulate Caroline by joining the adventure.

Safari 8 is currently showing on CBBC. Previous episodes are available via the BBC iPlayer.
