Dig In - a great way to grow your own!
When: 01/03/2010 to 31/08/2010
Dig In is a major BBC campaign to get the British population growing and cooking their own vegetables. This year we are encouraging all Scouts to get involved with the campaign and grow your own grub either at Scouts, at home or in whatever space you have available.
The Dig In five
The free seed allocation is now over. The five vegetables are carrot, mixed salad, courgette, basil and French beans. To find out more about them, and animations on how and when to plant them see bbc.co.uk/digin
Ideas galore
Programme ideas to support the campaign are available on Programmes Online. They follow the four stages of the Dig In season: sow, grow, harvest and cook. Special recipes will be added later on in the growing season just in time for you and your Group to get tasting your home-grown goodness.
Dig In is there to support you every step of the way. Check out bbc.co.uk/digin to watch sowing, growing and harvesting animation guides and find out more about your five veg. There is also a Dig In gallery, where you can see what everyone else is growing, and upload your own photos.
Who can dig in?
Everyone can get involved in Dig In, from the youngest Beaver Scout to the oldest adult leader. And you don’t need an allotment or large veggie patch to get growing … you can use grow bags, pots or even old food containers and drinks bottles – whatever space you have! For further information, go to bbc.co.uk/digin
How do I get started?
Go to Programmes Online and search for ‘grow vegetables’ to find the ideas for your section. A good one to start with is Composting Capers, as you’ll need soil to plant your seeds in. You’ll also find the link you need to be able to order your seeds. Note: This link only works when you are logged in to scouts.org.uk
Get interactive
You can follow the progress of Scouts digging in at the Scouts Dig In blog. Meet an experienced Scout gardener and a complete novice, and get involved yourself by leaving comments and sending in your pictures.
