Census 2012

As in 2011, the 2012 census asks for information about members' ethnicity, and their disabilities or long-term illnesses.

The categories for ethnicity on the census form match those used by the UK national census, and this will enable us to get a much more accurate picture of how closely Scouting truly reflects our local areas.

The information collected about disabilities and special needs will help us improve and more accurately target the support we provide for adults and young people.

Based on the results of last year’s census, we are planning to work on promoting Scouting within Asian and Eastern European communities, and will also be improving the support for leaders working with young people who have autistic spectrum disabilities and behavioural disorders.

Most groups already have systems in place to collect this information. Depending upon these systems, groups may wish to:

  • Use this as an opportunity to check and update their own records, by asking parents/carers etc to complete a new personal details form incorporating the revised questions.
  • Include the revised questions in their existing census data collection system.
  • Use the updated anonymous forms (available below).

The purpose of the forms (available in Word and PDF formats) is that you can use them immediately before the census in order to collect accurate data anonymously. The forms, which have been reduced in size based on recent feedback from members, contain some additional information on the census, aimed at parents and carers.
